Norton Fredricks
Hello, my name is Norton (he/ him) and I am a queer sustainable fibre artist with Indigenous heritage living and working on Bullongin land (Hope Island, Gold Coast) who specializes in felt and botanical dyes, using only natural materials I also create thoughtful slow clothing, wearable art and soft furnishings.
Retritus is a reworked name that was developed from ‘detritus’ (dead particulate organic matter that decomposes with the help of microorganisms in to nutrient rich substrate ie. leaf litter on a forest floor) while incorporating the Reduce, Reuse, Recycle ethos. I think it works perfectly for me because I collect leaves to use in my botanical printing along with collecting the detritus (remnants, textile waste and discarded clothing) of the fashion industry. I love the idea of using ‘detritus’ and breaking it down in to nutrient rich cloth that nourishes the soul, mind and body while bringing awareness to the importance of natural fibres
