Brendon Porteous
Brendon is one of Australia’s leading Aboriginal artists. His family (Kamilaroi tribe) is from Moree, NSW, but he moved to Tweed Heads area when he was young. He was inspired to take up art by his older brother and now makes a living through his artwork, having developed a unique style of Aboriginal art combined with coastal influences.
The animals used in Brendon’s work are the kangaroo and the emu – two iconic animals used in the current Australian coat of arms (approved in 1905). These animals can never walk backwards, so symbolize Australia as only ever going forward
