Dreamtime spirit of the termite story
Long, long time ago. All those blind termites lived way down, deep in the ground, when one day they say to one another “if we go up above, maybe we will be able to see?”
So, they dug their way up to the top, but stopped under a big
Gum-tree. They stopped and smelt the timber of the Gum-tree and said “Let’s eat our way up this tree “so they did, all the way up the centre of the branch.
A man came along and said that he was going to cut that branch down for fire wood and he did. But, when he looked inside the branch he saw the termites and said” ï don’t want these termites in my branch so I will chop of the top of the branch and poke them out with a stick”
The termites heard this and said “no, we will all die, the black ants, and the bull ants, and the birds will eat us”. We will hide our spirit in this branch!
The man poked all the termites out of the branch, and they got quickly eaten up, and the man said, “I will blow down this branch to make sure they are no more termites”.
The spirits of the termites heard this and if we make happy music when he blows down the branch, he will let us stay here forever.
The man blew, heard the happy music, and he was glad, so he let the spirits live there.
So now, when you play the didgeridoo, you know you are playing the spirit of the termites
